Number 10 Bridge Improvements

SSRTA volunteers started scraping & staining the Number 10 Bridge today. We want to thank them for their efforts as this is going to take awhile. Thank you all. Can't wait to see it when it is done. Any volunteers looking for something constructive to do, contact Mary Halsnik.

Snow Shoe Rails to Trails takes out the trash.

PHILIPSBURG — Snow Shoe Rails to Trails, a volunteer-based organization, is helping keep trails and the roads clean, according to Rush Township residents.

The organization picks up litter on trails and side roads, said Gary Halsnik, who sits on the board of trustees at Snow Shoe Rails to Trails.

Last weekend, the organization picked up 50 bags of garbage over a distance of 8-10 miles, Halsnik stated. The litter accumulates when people throw it out the window or dump large appliances, such as a couch or refrigerator, on the roadside.

The group uses four wheelers and a truck with a trailer to collect all the garbage. Although the team continues to tackle the littering issue, the problem continues to grow.

“It seems like it’s getting worse and worse every year,” said Halsnik. “These people keep throwing and throwing and throwing, and I don’t know why.”

Putting up ATV signs and hooking in with Snow Shoe Rails to Trails has had the unexpected benefit of some cleanup and increased responsibility from riders, observed Supervisor Jason Vaux at a recent Rush Township meeting.

Snow Shoe Rails to Trails is happy to give back to the community, according to Halsnik.

“If the township and the boroughs gave us permission to use their roads, then we’re nice enough to go there and help pick the garbage,” Halsnik explained.

Halsnik also tackles the issue of pollution close to home. Whenever he rides his side-by-side, he takes a squeezer in hand and grabs cans, paper or whatever else is laying around.

“People can pick garbage up anytime,” Halsnik noted.

Rush Twp. Road Cleanup

Snow Shoe Rails to Trails contributed to the Philipsburg Elks Lodge and Country Club Clean up along highways on Saturday May 8,2021. Volunteers collected trash from Casanova Road to Black Moshannon Park, Casanova Spur, Chestnut Street, Coaldale Road, Loch Lomond Road, One Mile Road, Elks/SSRTA Trailhead. 

60 Bags trash was collected, along with various wood and plastic products and 6 tires. All trash was taken to the Rush Township Facility and unloaded on a dump truck which will then be taken to Centre County Recycling and Refuse. Thank you to all the volunteers. 

Trail Improvements

Mary Halsnik stained and repainted the Clarence Kiosk. She also weeded the surrounding area and finish painting the Clarence Railing adjacent to the gate. Patrick Warefield painted the Clarence Gate. Thank you to both!!! Looks Great.

Replaced Signs

Snow Shoe Rails to Trails volunteers replaced stolen signs on Walker Street in Newtown and added a few signs to educate users to go slow and to turn down radios-Be respectful. 

We also added a few pictures of signs installed by volunteers on Ernestville Road last week.

Now -- End users need to pay attention to the signs so we can all use these connections to get to our businesses and other trails. There is no need to go fast or to play radios loud near houses in these areas.
