Bloody Skillet to Whiskey Springs Connector - 2nd Meeting

DCNR/Larson Group held the 2nd of two meetings last night at Lock Haven University to discuss the results of the feasibility study to connect Bloody Skillet to Renovo & Renovo to Whiskey Spring. After a presentation of the conceptual trail, we were divided into 3 groups to discuss input. Safety, patrols, economic impact on the businesses were the main issues addressed. There still remains a puzzle to connect at Renovo from both sides. We want to thank Steve Seltzer from Steve Seltzer Powersports in Altoona, a corporate sponsor of the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails  for attending this session and supporting the project. Steve provided some good suggestions and we appreciated his input.

Bloody Skillet to Whiskey Springs Connector - 1st Meeting

We had a good informational DCNR meeting last night at Lock Haven University. Larson Design Group presented their conceptual disign to connect Bloody Skillet To almost Renovo and Whiskey Springs to almost Renovo. The puzzle is to link the two systems at Renovo. We had about 150 people in attendance - great turnout. There is another meeting next Tuesday, December 19, 6-8pm at Lock Haven University. We need your help, support and interest at this next meeting. DCNR is asking for your thoughts how to link the two trails around or through Renovo. It would also be nice of more corporate sponsors and business owners to attend and demonstrate their support for the project too. They have alot to gain from this as well. Please try to attend as we need your help!! A few pictures from las tonight's meeting.
Thank you, Larry

Day Of Caring On The Snow Shoe Rails to Trails

Marilee Close scheduled the Bald Eagle Area 8th grade students for a Day of Caring on the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails, October 5, 2017.
The Bald Eagle Area students that volunteered for this project and their teachers - Marci McGonigal and Mandy Woodring were delivered by Jim Cramer bussing. Gary Halsnik and Larry Mayes met everyone and explained the work needing done.

We were divided into two crews, one painting the perimeter fencing surrounding the Gillentown Trailhead. The other crew painted tire rim post used for parking at events.

The students painted a lot more than the trail expected. They got all the rim post painted and about 1/2 of the entire perimeter fence. After the work was completed, they ate their lunch and all did a walk down the trail to the Route 144 tunnel. What a great project for the students to take on and help out the SSRTA for a couple hours. Mrs. McGonigal and Mrs. Woodring did a great job directing their kids and the project. The SSRTA wants to thank everyone involved in "Day of Caring" on the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails.

5th Annual Carns Equipment/SSRTA Pig Roast

Alot of volunteers made the 5th Annual Carns Equipment/SSRTA Pig Roast a success. Preping prior to the event, during and cleanup afterwards - Hogs were purchased from Marks Meat of Lamar, cooking the hogs all night long - Chris Vangor, family and friends did another awesome job preparing them for the next day event. Alot of members and help from the Centre County Probation Office provided a large crowd a great meal. This was the first time that we ran out of food for the pig roast. It was awesome to have such a large crowd on a rather cooler day. Jack's Snack Shack was on hand to provide ice cream but the cooler weather put a little damper on the ice cream sales this day. Jack always does good when the weather is hotter. We want to thank all the volunteers and the members for their support for this event. Without you there would be no event and fundraiser. Ron Fye and his wife Sheila did a fantastic job parking the trailhead full and then filling in some of the overflow areas. Thank you all and Carns has already scheduled the 6th Annual Pig Roast for September 29, 2018. The State Trails will still be open for this event next years. Thank you everyone from Carns Equipment!!!

ATV CONNECTOR TRAIL STUDY: BLOODY SKILLET TO WHISKEY SPRINGS

Would you like to ride your ATV from the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails all the way to the Whiskey Springs ATV trails? It can happen! Read about the ATV Connector Trail Study being done by LARSON DESIGN GROUP to determine the feasibility of the most direct, environmentally sound, and sustainable connector trail possible between the Bloody Skillet and Whiskey Springs ATV trails.

Download and read about the connector trail study here: http://www.docs.dcnr.pa.gov/cs/groups/public/documents/document/DCNR_20033209.pdf

If you enjoy riding ATVs and want to see this connector trail become a reality, you’re encouraged to attend a public meeting on either December 12, 2017 or December 19, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center at Lock Haven University.

The objective of the meetings will be to review the findings of the connector trail study, unveil conceptual routes, and answer questions and concerns. Your participation is needed to make this happen. Local businesses and the ATV community envision the trail as an economic and tourism driver, which would benefit small towns throughout the route.

Questions and comments can be submitted through a dedicated email address at ATVCONNECT@LARSONDESIGNGROUP.COM

Line Painting - Black Bear Trailhead

Work Detail:
Usually every two years the SSRTA paints the caution lines on the Casanova Road near the Black Bear Trailhead. This is the area where the atvs/utvs cross the road. While this year we were rained out when it was originally scheduled. So, Volunteers Gary Halsnik, George Holt, Larry Mayes scheduled help from the Philipsburg Fire Department and Fire Police to assist with Traffic control and to do the job on Monday, September 18, 2017. We met at the Black Bear Trailhead to develop our plan for the day. Dave Crane & Jim Fowler from the Fire Department and Fire Police placed cones/flares signs - Men Working. Then the other volunteers cleaned the pavement, taped the area and the painting was underway. After a few hours of Dave & Jim directing traffic, we moved to the opposite site of the road and completed it. One of the vehicles traveling through was candidate for Centre County Judge, Brian Marshall. Brian introduced himself and we all did the same. Of course he wanted to know what organization we all belonged to and wanted us to explain what we were doing and why. He was very interested in each individual and what we had to say. After a brief talk, Brian was on his way.

After Brian left, we all discussed how nice it was that he stopped in and how interested he was in what we were doing. Seems like a very nice man.

DCNR Youth Certification Training at their location in Clearfield on Saturday, September 16, 2017

Carns Equipment and Snow Shoe Rails to Trails held DCNR Youth Certification Training at their location in Clearfield on Saturday, September 16, 2017. The SSRT & Carns also provided a meal to anyone stopping by this day as well as the children taking the course and the parents attending the event. Jim Verost made his special chili - wow the best!! A real big hit. Trilby Mayes helped make the potatoes, hot dogs & kraut. Carns also supplied beverages too. It was great to see all the participants and their parents. It was great to have one of our other corporate sponsors, Lee Williamson at the event. Lee's words were, my god they have a lot of atvs/utvs here and a lot of other things to offer as well. Nice to see the Corson's from Lock Haven stay and have lunch with us too. Great people!!

Bob Biggans & George Holt did a wonderful job as usual providing the training. They always seem to come up with somethings to make it fun and interesting for the kids. Wayne Wynick-retired Assistant Forest Manager of Black Moshannon Forest also assisted with a presentation to the group. Wayne provided some various views & humor to keep everyone interested.

Christian provided another great job or atv inspection checks prior to running the atv. The students stayed well tuned while he reviewed the check list.

We want to thank Justin, Steve, Geoff Carns, Kurt Climie, Rob, Tom and all that helped with the event.

Testimonial

Nice testimonial for one of our corporate sponsors, Best Line Powersports in Centre Hall.

On Friday of Labor Day Weekend, I unloaded my razor for a nice weekend of riding with a group of my friends. Well, it shut off and would not start after I unloaded it. A group of my friends helped me put it back on the trailer and I took it to the Best Line Powersports Centre Hall Store location. Fred Yearick, Dave Walker, Marty Wagner and one other gentleman(didn't get his name) got the razor in at the end of the day, made repairs and got me back on my way. I can thank that crew enough for making my weekend!! They turned a terrible situation into a great weekend. Now that's how a business should treat their customers and I sure appreciate it.

Flowers Planted at Trailhead

Mary & Gary Halsnik planting some flowers near the gate to the pavilion at Gillentown Trailhead. A good start of getting flowers to beautify this area. Also, please see some beautiful flowers growing near the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails Memorial planted by Sue Stimer and sisters. The organization thanks you all for making a difference!!
If anyone has flowers that you would like to plant, please do. We are looking to fill the area with flowers above the Limestone ditch on the left side of the gate to the pavilion. You can see the existing flowers so plant to the left of them.

SSRTA Week Long ATV Trip

SSRTA did a week long atv trip at the end of July and beginning of August. First we stop at Forest Lodge in Marienville and rented some rooms and camping areas too. We met the new owners, Dave & Suzzy - wonderful people-and they are making some nice improvements to the rooms and camp sites. Eric Brooks was excited to hear about the new driveway Dave is going to install into the camping area.

We spent 3 days at Marienville riding 3 separate trails & eating at several different restaurants - Voulwinkles for wings, Kelley's for breakfast, Bettina's for wonderful Italian food. The approximate 28 mile bike trail is one that is for experience riders. However, the Marienville/Timberline trails are easier areas for riding. We then traveled to Coudersport and stayed at the Mill Stream Inn and others camped at the Potato City Campground.

We took one day off from riding and relaxed around the camp fire. Mike & Nicole Harris prepared excellent BBQ ribs and chicken for supper that day. Then, we rode the Potato City Trail down to Lyman Run Dam. It was sure nice with the extra riding available that we could ride to the parks concession stand and get ice cream & hot dogs. Great idea and sure hope that it could happen at Black Moshannon Park someday. What a great economic impact.

We then traveled to Whiskey Springs and rode it one day and then back to Snow Shoe to ride the SSRT and Bloody Skillet. One great experience with a bunch of good friends to share such wonderful memories.

15th Annual Best Line Powersports/SSRTA Chicken BBQ

After a week of hot humid rainy weather, we lucked out with one beautiful day for the 15th Annual Best Line Powersports/SSRTA Chicken BBQ. We had another great crowd who seemed to be having a lot of fun-enjoying wonderful riding weather and of course as delicious chicken bbq dinner. Once again, Chris Vangor and his helpers - Tim Bumbarger, Andy Basalla, Jim & Kyle Vangor out did themselves with that tasty chicken. We thank them so very much for their hard work, getting up at midnight to prepare the chicken for the event. We also had some great help provided to us by the Centre County Probation Office, who set up the day before and the day of the bbq. Many thanks to our volunteers of the SSRTA also - for painting lines, manning stations - keeping things running smoothly through the entire event. We can't forget Jack Miller and his tasty ice cream -- and a thank you to our two parking attendants Sheila and Ron Fye - They helped keep the parking organized by filling the parking lot and then filling up the overflow areas along the trail and the road to the Moshannon Community Center. Our 50/50 winner was Tom Robbins of Sullivan County. Congratulations and thank you to all the members that supported the trail at this event. Best Line Powersports has a great display of uints that created a lot of interest in the crowd, especially the razors & General. Sure had a lot of people looking them over. Mike Getz and his daughter CC looked like they had a wonderful time riding too. We noticed CC driving this time and doing a good job. Fifthteen years of sponsorship of our chicken bbq and we certainly appreciate their backing.

We even saw a black snake on the trail Monday, very stiff and cold as we relocated it into the woods.

One other note: DCNR advised that they would be grading the swichback on the connector trail starting Tuesday, this coming week. So, it should be in good shape for opening day, Friday, May 26.

Work Detail Gillentown Trailhead 04-08-2017

A great turnout for the first large group work detail scheduled for 2017. Volunteers came from as far away as Lancaster, Ringtown to help out with the projects. Andy Shultz's led a crew brushing.  Jim Leigey led a crew collecting trash along Tennessee Turnpike down Kato Road, approximately 5 miles was covered. Gary Halsnick led a crew to install belting on the Rock Run Bridge and Trilby Mayes led the crew to start staining the bridge as well. Jack Miller led a crew staining Black Moshannon Bridge. Although a lot of work was done, both bridges will need completed on the next work detail along with completing the belting on Rock Run Bridge. We also had a grouse check out our project on the Rock Run Bridge all day. Jack Snack Shack provided the hoagies for the volunteers and everyone was appreciative of his great hoagies. The Centre County Probation Office also provided some very good workers. We appreciated all the hard work they all put into our trail. Hope to see another good turnout on the next work detail scheduled for Saturday, April 22, 2017. Please email Larry Mayes at: ssrta1@gmail.com if  you plan to attend. The SSRTA will be providing lunch and beverages for the volunteers.

Work Detail 04-05-2017 Drainage Pipe Install

Fred Lingle, Gary Halsnick, Marlin Luse and Larry Mayes planned out a work detail on the best day of the week to install 30ft of drainage pipe. The pipe was installed near the gate by the pavilion. The ditch leading to the pipe was also lined. Some time was used to level off the stone/snow balls still remaining in the parking lot and some time was used to fill in the water line ditch where it has been sinking. Most of the upper side of the parking lot is in really good shape. We still have a soft spot in the center where the ditch was installed - this will be fixed over the next several weeks.

SSRT Pavilion Water Line Install

The trail has been planning to install a frost free water spigot near the pavilion and also near the restrooms at Gillentown Trailhead. Then, we could have the use of water for our events. The plan is to have the water turned on in the Spring and off in the fall. Both spigots will have locks installed to prevent over running of water and mostly used for events. On Monday, March 20,2017 volunteers showed up to help get the 1000ft. of line installed. Fred Lingle ran backhoe, Gary Mayes volunteered his backhoe and services to handle some of the hard digging areas with large rocks etc. Harry Moore move a lot of snow throughout the parking lot to help it melt. Gary Halsnick, Ron Fye, Larry Lingle, Marlin Luse and Larry Mayes helped install the spigots and lay the pipe in the ditch. The pipe was completely installed by end of day Wednesday, March 22. Now, we are waiting for the Mountaintop Regional Water Company to tie the pipe into their main water line. Many thanks to all who worked so hard to accomplish this project.
