Trail Notices

TRAIL NOTICES

Kato Bridge Replacement Project:
The Snow Shoe Township Supervisors have advised the SSRT that the first phase of the project was awarded to a contractor. The contractor is responsible for tearing down the bridge and repairing concrete pillars. Phase two of the project to replace the bridge will be placed out for bids after phase one is completed.

Gas Line Project on Kato Road:
Snow Shoe Supervisors have alerted the SSRT that a new gas line will be laid on parts of the Kato Road starting in 2015. We have been advised that there may be some delays and possibly a day or so of road closings at various times during this project. But road closings will be kept to a minimal and the SSRT will be notified of road closings so we can post them on our website and facebook page. We were initially advised that there will be no weekend work. But, keep checking our website and we will try to keep you abreast of the project.

Gas Line Crossing Near Clarence Gate:
A new gas line will be installed this next summer about 100 yards up the trail from the Clarence Gate towards the Number 10 Gate. They will be crossing the trail only. We will receive a two week notice prior to any digging and the trail should only be shut down for a short time. Of course that is if there are no problems with installation of the lines etc. Signs will be placed on both ends of the ditch area being dug to alert trail users. Then a fence will be installed on both sides of the trail to stop unwanted access. This should only be a day or two job because the gas company is only crossing the trail. Keep up to date with projects by checking our website www.ssrt.org and our facebook page. Thank you all for your patience during all of this construction. The construction project will not take place on the weekend.

Elk Ride 2014 Update and Photos

SSRTA Supports CMATVA Elk Ride & Children Toy Drive
On Saturday a group of SSRT members met at Newman's Sandwich Shop in Clarence for an early breakfast. What a great breakfast it was as they opened up a little early for us. Mr. & Mrs. Newman, Rhonda and Jaynie did a great job handling the large crowd and provided a great meal. We got our meals quickly and then we were on our way to Benezette. There we were welcomed by Leroy Hake, Colten & Ray Dunlap as they instructed us where to park. Then, after unloading it was off the the Elk Visitors Center and present toys for the children and register with CMATVA. Most then toured the Elk Visitors Center, purchased some raffle tickets on the Polaris utv that Carns Equipment provided to the Elk Center, some watched the Elk movie and a few did some shopping.

This Elk Ride was the 3rd Annual Elk Ride-Those that attended the 1st Elk Ride can remember Wayne Yahn saying-the turnout was so well that CMATVA was going to make this an annual ride. Well, they did and it has only grown each year. Wayne could see the positive economic impact this was going to have on the few businesses in the area and he could see the interest by the people on the tour. Since then, Henry Sorgen & his crew has taken the event on and to the next level.
Henry Sorgen divided all into four groups and our group was number 1. Henry led us down the road past a successful hunter that was skinning out an Elk. Then we road to the Benezette Restaruant for a meal of Elk Burger, pulled pork and much much more. If you left there hungry, it was your own fault as they provided quite a spread. Then Henry led us off in a different direction where we saw an Eagle soring throught the sky. Then, we were off to the Benezette Winery. I saw people leaving with cases of wine to take home. This had to be a good day for the winery. They did a good job getting us through quickly so they could get ready for the next group.

We then took off riding the atvs/utvs on legalized roads looking for Elk. We pulled off at quite a few Elk sightings, taking pictures and just in amazement. Such a large animal when you get close to them. We saw - probably 150 to 175 - the groups best estimation. We then headed back to our vehicles and loaded up for the return to our homes.

CMATVA did a great job organizing and handling the event. Great positive economic impact event. Great job all!!

SSRT Raffle - DCNR Training Update

On Saturday, October 11, 2014, Snow Shoe Rails to Trails & Best Line Powersports provided DCNR Youth Certification Training at their Centre Hall location. George Holt & Bob Biggans were the SSRT trainers and Marty Wagner was Best Lines trainer. Clyde Onavage - DCNR Ranger from Rockrock State Forest also participated in the training too.

First was the classroom instructional part of the training, then to the outside for the hands on section. The trainees all seemed to love the outdoor part as the corners got a little muddy and slippery.

All the participants passed the course and were presented their temporary certificate so they can now ride state and SSRT Trails. Trilby Mayes presented each of the participants a SSRT t-shirt at the end of the class.

We want to thank all the parents and participants for attending this training. A number of you explained afterwards how thorough of a job was done by the trainers. Thank you goes out to all of our trainers too and to Best Line Powersports for allowing the SSRT to put on the training at their new location.

Tour De Forest Photos and Update

Snow Shoe Rails to Trails has attended the Tour De Forest for the past 8 years. This was a special year as Central Mountain ATVA also attended with us on their first Tour De Forest. The two day ride was led by Maintenance Director of SSRT, Eric Brooks.

We met early Saturday morning at Snow Shoe and traveled to Brookville for breakfast. Then, on to Marienville Fire Company to register. There was an atv & snowmobile raffle and lots of clothing on sale from the local atv club.

Then, off to Forest Lodge to meet up with Henry Sorgen and some of his crew which was already set up for camping at the Forest Lodge. Frank & Sue (owners of motel and campground) are like family to us. They go above and beyond for the SSRT each year.

After riding out a few miles, the Fire Company is set up for your lunch along the trail. There, we ran into a few of our friends from Pittsburgh, Chad & Michelle. We rode the wooden connector across the swamp-what a great idea for continuing the trail & one that we enjoy each year.

Then, Sunday morning, we rode directly from the Forest Lodge on our atvs to Marienville to the Lions Club for breakfast. A great breakfast it was and they tried to serve the large crowd as quickly as possible. Then, Eric Brooks led us on the 2nd day of the forest traveling some of the trails that we didn't get to the first day. We stopped at the huge glacier rocks for a picture opp, and a few mud (play areas) where everyone in there was having a blast. We rode the rest of the trail back to the Forest Lodge, cleaned-up and back to Marienville to eat a great Italian meal at Bettina's.

A great turnout for the Tour De Forest and a great time had by all.

Day Of Caring - BEA High School

Bald Eagle High School 7th Grade Students and two teachers helped the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails do some much needed work today. They worked closely with volunteers Larry Mayes & Jack Miller.

Some of the work performed was brushing, collecting trash, painting various items, cleaning posting board and installing a memorial brick at the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails Memorial. Sand was also spread in areas needing it on the memorial.

Snow Shoe Rails to Trails  wants to thank all of the students and teachers for helping the trail  on the Day of Caring. Your work was much appreciated.

CMATVA Rodeo Update & Photos

A group of SSRT members attended the CMATVA rodeo held on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Flat Run Speedway near Kylertown. Various age groups are entered into several catagories and have an opportunity to win prizes & trophies. Carns Equipment of Clearfield and 234 Motorsports of Wingate were in attendance to display a few of their units and use them for demo rides. CMATVA did a great job serving the people with sloopy joes, hot dogs, French fries and many beverages. Paul Eggler did a great job transporting anyone wanting a train ride. The volunteer staff kept the events moving while providing safe instructions to those registered. This was a great event for familes to root on their participants and that they did. Remember to plan for next year the same time-the last Saturday in September, 8am registration and 10am start time. Let's make the crowd & participants larger than ever.

Pig Roast Photos and Update

On Saturday, September 20, 2014 we celebrated our 2nd Annual Pig Roast with Carns Equipment of Clearfield. A crowd that would make anyone happy started showing up on Wednesday getting their spot for the weekend. They came from as far away as North Carolina. That group was still there as of Monday evening. Rich & Colleen Randolph and volunteers did a great job parking to get everyone in the trailhead or on both of the overflow parking areas. We had a great bunch of volunteers that made this event such a success. Chris Vangor family and friends did another excellent job roasting the pigs. We also want to thank Marks Meats of Lamar for getting and preparing the hogs. Members, without your support we could not hold such an event, so we want to thank you for being here. Carns Equipment, thank you all as it was a wonderful day!
